Hey friends,
A week ago, Summer of Shipping sent out an optional “Group Formation” survey to help students find groups (if they haven’t already).
Right now, I’m working on matching students and I realize how helpful it is to have a LinkedIn profile that accurately represents your skills. The easiest groups to create are those where students indicate a clear interest and their LinkedIn profiles paint a plausible story that they could deliver a project in that area of interest.
The most difficult to match are those who don’t have an online presence (no LinkedIn profile), and don’t make a clear statement of what they’re looking to do (interested in everything).
It’s crazy - just with a little clarity of intent and information about your skills, the people who are trying to help you can actually help you. Without clarity and information, they can’t.
Anyways, just a little update from today.
Change Log
Feather is gearing up for a launch! Our preflight check was awesome (woot! even had our first outage 😂), but now it’s time to do some tests with real marketing pushes.
Summer of Shipping continues to grow. There’s now a Friday “section” of the Thursday meeting. Projects are forming. Mentors are chiming in. Currently, focusing on making sure we’ve “nailed” the experience before we scale it more in the coming weeks. Still much work to do.
In Software Mentor, Phil wrote about “Taking a Break” on Memorial Day, with a call out back to SpaceTime!
Misc
📣 Shoutout to CMC (Phil’s alma mater) for stepping up and helping students with additional “sponsored internship” grants (see story in Fortune). Internship experience is an accelerant for job-readiness, and making grants accessible to students means unpaid internships can now be entertained by those who were previously unable to afford such an arrangement.
Alright, until next week - and stay safe!
Phil
